Considering Relocating Your Place of Business ~ 104

With combined experience of more than forty years, the professional team at Earl's Moving Company offers tips for relocating your office. They have been around the block several hundred times, know the ropes and can skillfully pack and move your office quickly and cost efficiently.

Whether the reason for relocating your office is that you need more space, less space or a bright, new location, being prepared is the key! Moving from Hoover to Atlanta is certainly a huge undertaking, but even relocating from Alabaster to Calera calls for preparedness.

As soon as you have decided to 'make the move', whether local or long distance, it is important to create a timeline. If your office is small, it is a good idea to allow three months for planning, packing and getting everything in order before moving day. Allow six-eight months in a medium sized office, and up to a year in a large office.

Local Move, Long Distance Move

Choose your move in date and begin your timeline working backwards.

Create a list for your timeline, including items such as:
  • Appoint or ask for volunteers from each department to establish priorities, make sure deadlines are met and coordinate each area. This team will ensure employees pack their desks, files and personal items. They will also keep employees up to date on the progress of the move, hopefully keeping a positive atmosphere. Also all employees should be made to feel comfortable offering suggestions for the new space.
  • This is a great time to clean out and clean up files, desks, computer files, etc. Send outdated information to storage and destroy what is no longer needed. This will save time, energy and money when moving day arrives. It will also create a clean, fresh start in your new office space.
  • Decide what you are moving, such as furniture, cubicles, equipment, records and files.
  • Request the floor layout to identify electrical outlets, storage space, etc.
  • Create a new office layout. Measure and plan for each employee's desk, cubicle or office space. Don't forget common areas, such as storage rooms, shipping area, server room, kitchen, reception area and conference rooms. Take into consideration each piece of furniture, filing cabinets, and office equipment.
  • Call Earl's Moving Company to schedule professional packing and add your moving date to their calendar.
  • Notify leased equipment providers of the move to confirm the best way to relocate copiers, servers, etc.
  • Notify service providers of the move in date to avoid downtime in telephone and network infrastructure.
  • Confirm no additional painting or construction is needed prior to the move in date.
Keep in mind to have an internal plan to keep employees up to date and an external plan to keep vendors and clients up to date. Being prepared, making sure everything on the list is complete, and communication will guarantee the most stress free move. Depending on Earl's Moving Company will leave you free to carry on with business with as little interruption as possible.
